On Wednesday, April 28th I drove down to Johnny K's Powersports in Niles (1 hr drive each way) to have the 500-mile service done on our new Slingshot and to install the badge blackout kit that was back ordered when I bought and picked up the machine in March. The service consisted of inspections, adjustments, lubrication, and most importantly an oil & filter change to complete the engine 500-mile break-in period. I had previously talked with Quentin regarding scheduling the service, and he had emphasized how important that first service to change engine oil was to engine life. He also emphasized how important it was to arrive on time, given the current workload in the service department. He told me that the work would take 3-4 hours, and I had a buddy pick me up for breakfast and a Slingshot ride. My appointment was at 9:00 am, I was there at 8:45 am. When I checked in at the service desk at 9:00 the advisor (Mike?) told me that hed call me in about a week when the work was done. I explained that I had an appointment to do the work while I waited and he replied that appointments arent being scheduled right now, its being managed on a first-come-first-served basis. I insisted that he speak with Quentin to straighten it out, which he did. It took about 15 minutes, but they would take the Slingshot and do the work while I waited, as planned. My buddy dropped me back at Johnny Ks at 11:30 and my Slingshot was sitting outside, ready to go. I paid my bill, picked up my key fob, and headed out for a ride home. Upon reviewing the RO when I got home, I noticed that the oil filter hadnt been changed because there were none in stock. The RO was written to perform the 500-mile service, which included changing the oil and filter, and the Resolution stated 4/28/21 Service Complete. In the Recommended field No Oil Filters In Stock was entered. I was not charged for the filter and only paid for 5 quarts of oil, as expected without the filter being replaced. No mention of this was made when I picked up the machine, I had to find out myself by reading every line of the RO. Lesson learned, dont go by verbal confirmation of scheduled work being complete, verify it on paper. Although this may not be mechanically adverse to the engine since the oil itself was changed it would have been nice if I had been told that the service had not been completed as planned. The 500-mile break-in oil change is to remove oil that has been contaminated by particulate wear products from the initial engine break-in along with the filter that has loaded up with those particles. If Polaris calls this out as a maintenance requirement my warranty may be impacted if I have an engine problem down the road. It would also seem to me that additional business would be generated by reviewing recommended actions as an outcome of the work planned on the RO. I called and spoke to Quentin, who indicated that he was not aware of the situation and that he needed time to look into it. I pressed him as to when I would hear back from him and he stated 2 days. Today is day #6 and I havent heard back. Thats 4 working days to review an RO and find out when the oil filters were going to be in stock and call me back to arrange to have the filter changed. My intention was to arrange a ride with friends in the area and stop at the Niles location to have the filter changed while I waited. He also told me that I would be okay not changing the filter until the next service at 5,000 miles since the oil itself had been changed. Im not accepting verbal instructions to deviate from the OEM maintenance requirements. In the unlikely event that the oil filter plugs with contaminates it has a bypass to maintain oil supply to the engine. If this happens my oil will no longer be filtered, and I will never know until I have an engine issue, and then its too late. I seriously doubt that Polaris would accept my But the dealer told me that it was okay to not change the oil filter. excuse when if the engine ever has damage under warranty. Although I have read many good reviews regarding Johnny Ks service my first experience has certainly not been a favorable one. I also have a RZR that needs dealer service occasionally and I was going to start to bring it there rather than a local shop, now Im not so sure if that would be an improvement. People do make mistakes, granted. But the COVID and Im swamped excuses are wearing very thin. People are paid to do a job and the employer and the customer ought to have high expectations that the job is being performed correctly, 100% of the time. When a mistake is made, aside from learning from it correcting it should be a top priority. To correct this situation, I would like to have an oil filter and a quart of oil reserved and set aside with my name on it so that I can stop in at my convenience and have it changed while I wait, as originally intended. I also believe that as a gesture of goodwill Johnny Ks should perform this work at no cost to me, given the inconvenience that they have caused me.
